Google researchers have introduced AMIE, an AI system that can diagnose patients by engaging in conversations. This system has been trained using real doctor-patient dialogues and simulations to enhance its capabilities.

AMIE is created to inquire intelligent queries, analyze diagnoses, and express empathy when communicating with patients. Through a simulated patient environment, the system was trained and received automatic feedback to enhance its performance gradually. AMIE performed better than primary care physicians in patient simulations, ranking higher in both diagnostic accuracy and quality of advice.

AMIE’s diagnostic capabilities represent a major step forward in integrating AI into healthcare, unlike previous LLMs that mainly focused on medical summaries and basic questions. This advancement in AI technology has the potential to greatly improve access to high-quality patient care in the medical field.
