Apple closes San Diego AI team, moving operations to Texas

Apple is closing down an artificial intelligence team in San Diego that consists of 121 members. The team’s main goal was to enhance Siri through data analysis. Employees have been given the option to move to Texas before the end of February or face job loss.

The team is accountable for listening to Siri voice queries in different languages, evaluating their accuracy, and optimizing the assistant accordingly. The AI team was surprised by the announcement as they were getting ready to relocate within San Diego. There are reports of many employees being unwilling to relocate, and if they choose not to move, they may face termination on April 26. Apple’s choice stands out from the numerous job cuts happening in the tech industry, as the company has managed to avoid major layoffs.

Although Apple is not going through regular layoffs, the unexpected relocation seems insincere. However, the recent trend on social media of highlighting harsh layoffs has shown that numerous companies are not handling cuts gracefully, and Apple might be no different.
