Apple is working on an AI upgrade for the iPhone

Apple is said to be increasing its efforts in AI by acquiring companies, hiring new talent, and redesigning chips. This is part of their plan to run advanced models directly on the upcoming iPhones.

Since 2017, Apple has quietly bought 21 AI startups, and almost half of its AI job listings now include “deep learning.” The latest Apple chips promise better performance for AI tasks, with new MacBooks and Watches receiving major processing improvements. Recent research from Apple has shown progress in making AI models smaller for mobile use. Earlier reports suggested that Apple’s Ajax LLM is designed to operate on devices.

Apple has faced criticism for not keeping up with AI, but adding a strong model to the next iPhones could be a smart move. They might be trailing behind platforms like ChatGPT, yet the mobile AI competition still seems very open (we’re watching you, Siri 👀).
