Figma and Adobe have mutually agreed to terminate their previously planned merger, following a comprehensive regulatory review process that lasted for 15 months. The intention behind the merger was to combine Figma’s innovative design tools with Adobe’s extensive suite. Regulators from various countries engaged in extensive discussions with both Figma and Adobe throughout the review process.
Figma is still going strong as an independent platform, bringing forth fresh additions like native AI features, Dev Mode, Variables, and Advanced Prototyping. Figma will receive a cash payment of $1 billion from Adobe as a reverse termination fee following the termination.
The cancellation of the merger might be perceived as a setback for Figma and Adobe, but it also presents Figma with an opportunity to continue its journey as an independent entity. Designers are probably rejoicing at the prospect of not having to pay Adobe Studio’s exorbitant subscription fees every month.
