NASA presents the X-59, an aircraft designed for quiet supersonic transportation

A new X-59 experimental aircraft, developed by NASA and Lockheed Martin, has been introduced. It is designed to achieve supersonic speeds without generating disruptive sonic booms.

With its aerodynamic dart-shaped construction, the X-59 is able to break up shockwaves and significantly reduce the disruptive noise of sonic booms, resulting in a softer ‘sonic thump’. Traveling at 1.4 times the speed of sound, the experimental aircraft can cover a distance of 925 miles per hour. Instead of a traditional forward-facing window, the X-59 cockpit is equipped with a 4K screen that shows real-time front-view imagery. After being revealed to the public, the X-59 will go through various tests such as integrated systems testing, engine runs, and taxi testing. Its first flight is planned for later this year.

Supersonic travel has the potential to revolutionize business, military, and commercial aviation by making flights faster and more efficient, although it may take some time before it becomes commercially viable without causing excessive noise disruption.
