Delusion and Misconception about Windows XP and other older versions of Windows

There is a recent but common misconception about Windows XP and older Windows versions that they are not secure and usable.

Recently I hear sentences like:
"XP is discontinued, not usable."
"Windows XP is not safe. You'll be infected with viruses if you use it."
"What'll we do when Windows 10 becomes unsupported?"
"Why do you use Windows 7? Even Google Chrome doesn't support it."
"My antivirus doesn't support Windows 7. New viruses can target me."

I don't know what kind of support these people think Microsoft gives to these OS versions. I don't know what you think happens when support is cut for these OSs, when a new one emerges, or when an old one gets old but I want to address this misconception once and for all.

Discontinuation of official support for an OS does not mean the end of that operating system's lifespan.

If you only do office work and play old games, even a machine with Windows 98 and 16 MB RAM is enough for you.

Not everyone plays games, or new ones for a fact. Now, Windows 7 or even Windows XP can serve you good as a multimedia system. You can surf the web, watch TV shows and movies, listen to music and even do some work. Not everyone needs the new features of Windows 10 and beyond, and not everyone with older hardware has to use Linux.

Just because an OS is *relatively* old and doesn't receive security updates, doesn't mean that it is not safe.

I saw a thread called "Do not use Windows XP" and a YouTube video was attached that was spreading misinformation. However, a Windows XP user at the time or a user that does a bit of a research would have known about the existence of Windows Firewall. What I mean is, unless you specifically infect your system with malicious software, it is unlikely that your computer will get virus magically.

I do not think this also has to do with updates because just a tiiiiny bit of research shows that even the RTM version of Windows XP (without any service packs or updates) has Windows Firewall built in, so you're unlikely to get infected with computer worms that way as well!!!

There are also tons of unofficial patches that are created by the community. I've given some instances below.

Lack of support of browsers and popular programs also doesn't mean that there are alternative methods.

If and when the time comes for the Google to cut the support for these OSs for Google Chrome, just like the open-source alternatives (default solutions to be fair) you can use those same exact alternatives or more on Windows.
Supermium Browser which is a Chromium-based browser can be used in even Windows 2000.
With Kernel Extension programs, you can use new software on older OSs.
With some small patches for Steam, you can use Steam on XP.

Anti-Virus Software don't protect you from viruses, they protect you from yourselves.

Anti-Virus Software cleans, quarantines or destroys malicious software that make their way into your computer with Internet downloads or like a removable disk. If you use the internet consciously, don't put unknown USB disks etc. to your computer, you're unlikely to be infected with viruses, and unlikely to ever need Anti-Virus Software.

There's also a group of people that see pirated games as the biggest source of viruses. The lies that pirated games, torrent programs and game download websites are infectuous and that TLauncher is doing mining is only a misconception that people that are new to computers fall into.

⭐ Pirate game websites can have ads. But separating fake download buttons and ads from the real download link of the game is possible. For instance, when you see a button like below you need to be able to tell that it is fake from lightyears away :D You need to educate yourself on how to.

⭐ Game download websites can have fake clones. When you download pirated software from the correct source and link, and even from people that were cracking software even before we were born, the probability of getting infected is also near minimum.

⭐ TLauncher DOES NOT do mining :)

When the extended support for Windows 10 gets discontinued in 2025, I predict that we'll still be able to use new games and software at least until 2027-2028. One other common misconception is that you'll get a virus if you don't upgrade to Windows 11 immediately.

I hope this post was beneficial for all my friends that are misinformed.
The core idea is if you use your computer consciously and informed, a Windows XP system without an antivirus can be safe too.
Old != Unsafe
Needs > Modernity
Simplicity * Stability = Productivity

We're live in progressive time. Everything changes progressively. New bugs found over projects and fixed it. Older software can't get those security patches and vulnerable to possible bugs. Even there is no patches or microcodes for new CPU bugs like Meltdown, Spectre or so. After that researchers found new CPU bugs like Redbleed. You are vulnerable with them if you use older OSes.

Your computer and your phone is "you". Both are contains your most valuable data. Even your secrets to you may think no one should know. Don't use unmainteined software. Just prefer latest Linux or Windows releases. Keep your applications up-to-date.
